City of Bones, River of Blood Published on 1/29/2007 At first glance, or maybe even the second and the third, this wouldn’t be a book you would want to read. It is illustrated with dark, provocative imagery and the paragraphs seem to be unrelated. However, after the first few pages, you will know you have found a gem. Each segment is a snapshot of the narrator’s memory. Each is beautifully poetic. Some people might have difficulty reading metaphors and poetry, but I found this snapshot format made them easy to digest. Also, each one alone has meaning as well as together as a whole. Darby summed it up nicely when she called it, “a kaleidoscope of the psyche.” Although the novel is not linear, there is a story that starts to develop as you turn the pages. The reader follows the narrator as she lives through her youth in a small town named Cripplecreek. You learn of her many experiences in this small town. In the video on this page you will see Darby and Ingrid share some of their insights on City of Bones. Ingrid also reads some excerpts while Darby’s dog, Bear, plays in the background. We thought about putting Bear in another room or at least taking his toy away while Ingrid read, but having a dog around is part of the U.P. experience. Besides, Bear was excited that we were there and we didn’t want to spoil his fun. City of Bones, River of Blood is the fifth published book by author Darby Mitchell.
